In the most significant U.S. Supreme Court ruling on homelessness in decades, the court ruled Friday that cities can punish people forThe decision applies to cities in nine Western states that were previously barred from enforcing camping bans due to a lower court ruling that said such bans amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment.
“There are courts across the country that have been waiting for this decision to decide on how to move forward,” said Jesse Rabinowitz, the campaign and communications director for the National Homelessness Law Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. “We do anticipate that this will make it easier for cities and states across the country to pass or enact harmful laws that only result in people staying homeless longer.”except in designated areas under proper supervision.
