They established co-cultures of human hair follicle cells and sensory nerves, then mechanically stimulated the hair follicle cells, finding that this led to activation of the adjacent sensory nerves.They then decided to investigate how the hair follicle cells signaled to the sensory nerves.
They therefore concluded that in response to touch, hair follicle cells release that activate nearby sensory neurons.
