Experimental Error is a column about the quirky, comical, and sometimes bizarre world of scientific training and careers, written by scientist and comedian Adam Ruben.I’ve always thought of obsessive, anal exactitude as a prized quality in science. It makes sense to me, then, to apply that stance to both the science itself and the words that describe it. In other words, I’m a science personI’m aware that not everyone is like this.
If you correct a paper’s language, even in a constructive and noncondescending way, sometimes you even get that. It’s the stare that says you’re a worse scientist because you’re wasting time focusing on the wrong things. But there’s a certain derision that some scientists have about the rules of English expression. Not an unfamiliarity, which is understandable, especially for nonnative speakers.
ScienceCareers I couldn’t agree more. Clarity requires good grammar, and science writing should be more reader-centered than it is generally. Applause!
