♫ 'It's been seven hours and fifteen days Since you took my vole away...' ♫ A scientist tells whyynews that voles, the monogamous rodents, 'show the signs of despair' and basically give up on life when their partner is taken away.

Heartbroken voles get over their ex's with a shot of oxytocin. It's not so simple in humans, but researchers find you can ease the ache.

“Within a day after they mate, they then prefer to spend their time just sitting next to each other, touching each other — what we call ‘huddling,’” he said. “So just sitting next to each other, facing in the same direction, and perfectly still.”“A vole that has been with a partner and then you take the partner away, if you put them in a beaker of water for a few minutes, they tend to just float,” he said. “If you hold them up by their tail, they just hang there. They show the signs of despair.

It’s all brilliant and beautiful. Even the ugliest babies are beautiful in their mothers’ eyes — they bond. And the same oxytocin hormone is produced by dad, as well. And CRF stops oxytocin production cold. Young thinks it’s maybe a naturally evolved kind of insurance policy. Animal partners, voles and humans, have to spend some time apart to forage seeds or go to class or whatever. That CRF is part of what bums you out, makes you miss the other person, and go back to them to get another fix of oxytocin.

“We are uniquely equipped to replay and ruminate on negative feelings over and over and over again,” said Ethan Kross, who runs the Emotion and Self Control Lab at the University of Michigan. Kross said heartbreak is a uniquely insidious stress response because it invites that replaying of events:So to study heartbreak, Kross and his team designed an experiment that’s kind of messed up.

“The sensation is akin to holding a hot cup of coffee … without the that protective sleeve,” Kross said. Another strategy is to talk about the breakup like it’s happening to someone else, not you. Which kind of makes sense: Other people’s breakups always seem kind of melodramatic. Kross said it’s easy to think that way when it’s not your breakup — you didn’t suffer what he calls the emotional assault.

Winch has been working on filling that gap — he wrote a book about it called, “How to Fix a Broken Heart.” He dove into the literature, looked for research like Kross’ and others’, anything that touched on heartbreak.

why did npr tweet like this

Vole IS an anagram for Love, so it all makes sense...

....you doing okay?

tillinke did you write this headline?

Do not tweet while drinking red wine.

you ok NPR?

No. I stay up wondering why even a well-regarded media organization such as NPR seems to have now arrived at the embarrassing and false conclusion that intentionally omitting punctuation and capitalization from their posts somehow makes them seem hip as opposed to desperate.

Makes sense - flip the V and the L, and you’ve got Love

Whyy 😭 (Pun intended)

NPR, you okay there?

I do that every Valentines Day. It’s not just me?

This said virtually nothing!! Hiw can you cure humans?!! 🖤

That's so sad.

Now I do

Dear NPR social media intern: do you need a hug?

No, but I do spend sleepless nights wondering where all of the capital letters went.

Stop taking the Vole's partners away. End the despair, scientists.

Now I will!

damn you for this

r u ok npr

Not until now, Jesus, NPR!

Replying to Damn, NPR. That's some existential stuff right there. Have yourself a glass of wine and relax. Also: voles.

I love it! (No offense to the heartbroken voles, of course).

That is what would happen to me Abe my guy after 45 years!

eat arbys

Classic NPR: valentines sad for single voles...

R u ok dannynett

So I’m part vole?

Doesn’t everyone?

Never, ever date a leftist. You’re welcome.

I’ve thought about voles. But it’s usually after my cat has enjoyed a little vole playtime. Now? Oh god. I’ve contributed to vole depression.

We began the week woth drunk New York Times captions and finish the week woth this lol

I stay up late, because, well alcohol...

Heartwarming and sad at the same time

No

I'm a vole. It all makes sense now.

Yikes... Someone's having a tough night. 😬

This is worse ⬇️

Yeah. A lot, most animals have that 'thing'. If one takes the initiative to know. I see it as a soul. 💞

wtf this is already sad v-day hours whyyyy

Fuck, no.

This is a good tweet npr

Alright then. Happy Volentine’s day, I guess.

NPR is funny.

Holy shit do you need a hug or something? Is there someone we can call? Need to DM afspnational?

Love these little critters. Pun intended. The funny thing is we were taught in Psych that their monogamy and the presence of vasopressin is evidence that our species evolved as monogamists as well. And then we found other dna in their nests 🤣 ❤Nature

Well I am now

why, there are so many voles out there?

Where’s your proofreader?

Love you too

not a day goes by
