Fetal Lung Inflammation. This image shows protein expression of homeobox only protein , a marker of alveolar type 1 cells in red and endothelin receptor B on alveolar endothelial cells in green in the lung of a rhesus macaque fetus at a late gestational age . The AT1 cell-endothelial cell interaction forms the gas exchange surface of the lung, which is essential for breathing after birth.

In this study,developed and characterized a rhesus macaque model of chorioamnionitis using intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide challenge, which induced damage to alveolar structures that resembled chronic lung disease in neonates. Treatment with anti-inflammatory therapies that blocked interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α curbed inflammation and restored alveolar structures, suggesting that inflammatory mediators may be a therapeutic target for developmental lung injury.
