After the recent deaths of two students, some say children may be too young to make such decisions on whether to confront active shooters at their schools

Students across the country are taught what to do in case of an active shooter situation: avoid, barricade and hide and, as a last resort, confront the shooter.

But two school shootings in as many weeks where the students who confronted the shooter were killed are prompting officials to question this practice, or wonder, at the very least, should the risk of doing so be discussed.

I have a GREAT idea! Why don't we impose some regulation on gun ownership and use? Do this instead of forcing children how to 'confront active shooters' with lessons in warfare in an environment that mimics jail. Sound good?! Let's do this! GunReformNow

ALSO---SOME may say that the 'Children' in Congress are too worried about ELECTIONS to make decisions about GUNS!!! We NEED to get control of military type weapons of mass destruction!!!

As long as gun free zones exist. People with complete disregard for law and order will bring illegal weapons into said area and start a chaotic act of inhumanity, and every law abiding citizen there is a victim of political war and political stupidity.

Really this is the outcome that you have ended up with? It would seem the narrative of the story is that too young individuals took matters into their own hands and saved countless other friends. It’s a struggle against good and evil And I can identify clearly both sides!

Public Education is so 20th century, and is creating basket cases.

Don't even go their, there natural instincts ,kicked in

They should be making decisions about studying the planets, reading The classics , or learning about the civil rights movement ..classrooms are now combat zones ..shame on us

Yikes

I am just curious about the number of school shootings in Afghanistan or other ****hole countries.

Wrong. Children of all ages should be taught to VIOLENTLY resist school shooters. Try shooting people while an angry 6 year old comes flying off the teacher's desk, battens onto your head and claws at your eyes while the rest throw anything within reach at you until help arrives.

“Some say”? What would you?

A patient once asked me if taking Co-enzyme Q would decrease his cancer risk. I told him not near as much as if he stopped smoking. This is more insane than that conversation.

Why can’t every school have armed guards? As the most advanced country, we should be able to afford it.

But of course, they should be voting.

In this case the school administrators need to be held accountable. Not only did they ignore warning, I believe they took negative action against the people who brought the potential for such an occurrence to happen. Staff needs to be fired, the School Board needs to be recalled.

Well there comes a time when you must choose to fight so why not teach them properly.

That this is even a topic of conversation tells you everything you need to know about the state of gun law in the US. No teachers/students anywhere should have this as a cause for concern at any point in time. All guns should be removed from civilians period. GunControlNow

Absolutely

They should not have to engage anyone with a gun that intends to do harm. We need armed guards, professionals

Why is this even up for debate wtf

Anyone ( with the exception of LEO or our Warriors) who has faced live fire and lived understands confronting an active shooter is not a conscious decision but one of instinct and desperation

Shut up WSJ. You and your editorial board constantly kowtow to the idiot GOP leadership, all of you in the pocket of the NRA. You aren’t part of the problem, you ARE the problem.

Let’s be clear...adults are in charge of school safety. It up to adults to make smart decisions about creating safe school. When a child must sacrifice his/her life they are both victims and heroes. Adults failed.

Schools should teach kids civics,to read newspapers,do on-line research on political contributions and then protest the NRA which buys elected officials to prevent gun control. Let the NRA go back to its roots:Hunting Safety. EndCitizensUnited

“Some say” is not an argument.

Children too young to make complex tactical decisions that require high level thinking and emotional control? Color me shocked.

Never too young to be a hero.

Playing devils advocate here, but they aren't teaching they confront the shooter as a first response. Its taught as a last resort. The first step should always be to run from the situation. As a LAST resort, when all other options fail, is to attempt to fight for your life.

Seriously?

What is the debate if they are taught it’s a last resort after all the other options are exhausted? After running away, locking down, and hiding are no longer an option should they just wait for the inevitable? It seems more of a failure in explaining what the sequence should be.

They are forced to because we won’t protect them by arming teachers and guards. Total stupidity. We just create gun free zones and massive targets with zero real opposition.

Whaaaaaaat? Children too you g to confront an active shooter? GTFO

You think so WTF

THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!

More prove that the faith of this nation is on the youth: Stoneman Parkland HS students, aoc and the two young hero’s these past weeks.

Idiots!

Please. If my kid goes down absorbing bullets to save multiple other lives, he's a hero per the math alone. I would never discourage heroism in any child. I think these children are to be encouraged and celebrated. Math is math. 1 kid dead is obviously better than 2, 3, 4 or 14.

Wonder who are the pontificating “some”? These two YOUNG heroes saved the lives of many and should be remembered as courageous and selfish braves. This will serve as a caution to the cowardly to-be-killers that they will be stopped in their attempt to inflict maximum damage

Really? Then I guess they are too young to make decisions about gender, No?

No, just stand there and be slaughtered! The DNC needs a bigger body count to take your guns. Be a victim! Anything more would be teaching toxic masculinity.

The left would surrender to the devil himself before they'd endorse fighting back. The only foe they'll oppose are people who want to make a stand against evil.

SOME SAY? Madness...

Some say that, eh? What the actual feck is going on in America?🇨🇦

Lol the debate is how children should respond? Amazing how far gone we are.

Not sure that you can actually teach someone to confront a shooter. Your either the type that runs toward danger or away. It’s more like a reflex than a decision.
