About a million New York City public school students start school Monday in the United States' largest test of in-person learning since the pandemic began. Unlike some districts across the country, city officials say there will be no remote option.

to families that prefer it, New York City officials say there will be no remote option despite the persistence of the highly transmissible delta variant of COVID-19.

Masks will be required for all students and staff members, as is the case in schools across New York state. Ten-year-old Sincere Hughes was headed to his first day of sixth grade at Lab Middle School a few blocks away after spending all of last year in remote school. “It was kind of, like, hard to work,” Sincere said.

In the U.S., anyone 12 and older is eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. The Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine chief said last week he is hopeful children as young as 5 will beDe Blasio, a Democrat in his final months in office, has insisted that masks, cleaning protocols and random COVID-19 testing makes school buildings safe. But he has gotten pushback both from parents who want their children home and from unions representing teachers and other school staff members.

Asked if some students might just disappear from the system because their virus-wary parents won’t send them to school, de Blasio said “the vast, vast majority” of parents would bring their children to school.

Those million kids live in a very small area. It’s doubtful that they have not been out and about recently. However, there should be an option until youngsters are vaccinated. After all, aging infrastructure is likely not well ventilated. Recipe for disaster.

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard in the midst of a pandemic that is not going away. New York wants to see their covid numbers rise obviously because they will. It's the economy.... Check the sick students and teachers where schools have opened already. Insanity

So long Covid. Don't feel bad, the Miserables have plenty of use for you...

because we all must go back to 2019 when the world was perfect. Get to work kids, don’t worry, *most* of you won’t die.

Yeah. This is working beautifully in TN. 🙄

There will be no remote option... for now.

No remote options? What a bunch of aholes. Live instruction should always be available - especially if you want kids to stay home with even the sniffles (Delta) That said, kids 0-17 dying of C19 is rare, under 420 since Jan 2020 in all USA Vax can give boys 12-15 heart problem

Well, I’m sure looking forward to the results of this “test” - like thousands of kids getting COVID.

.. and in a few weeks, when a third of the students/staff are out sick (similar to the rest of the country) there will suddenly be a remote option. Why do we continue to do this to ourselves?
