SAN ANTONIO - As drought conditions persist, the San Antonio Water System is taking proactive measures to ensure compliance with water usage restrictions.
Currently, SAWS issues city-issued citations to customers found in violation of water restrictions, which require payment of a fee and an appearance in municipal court. However, under the proposed changes, these fines would be charged directly to customers' bills, simplifying the enforcement process.
Under the proposed changes, households exceeding a usage threshold of twenty thousand gallons would incur a surcharge of a little over ten dollars for every 1,000 gallons used beyond this limit. SAWS officials assert that this measure is intended to encourage conservation, particularly with hotter temperatures approaching.
However, not everyone is convinced that the proposed surcharge will effectively motivate homeowners to reduce their water usage. Some critics argue that the monetary penalty may not be substantial enough to incentivize conservation efforts.
