Restaurants in Saudi Arabia are no longer required to segregate men and women. The government announced the change, which upends a major hallmark of conservative restrictions that had been in place in the kingdom for decades.

A mean leaves the singles entrance at a restaurant in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019. Women in Saudi Arabia will no longer need to use separate entrances from single men or sit behind partitions at restaurants and cafes in the latest measure announced Sunday by the government that upends a major hallmark of the conservative restrictions that had been in place for decades.

While some restaurants and cafes in the coastal city of Jiddah and Riyadh’s upscale hotels had already been allowing unrelated men and women to sit freely, the move codifies what has been a sensitive issue in the past among traditional Saudis who view gender segregation as a religious requirement. Despite that, neighboring Muslim countries do not have similar rules.

The statement noted that the long list of published decisions was aimed at attracting investments and creating greater business opportunities. Across Saudi Arabia, the norm has been that unrelated men and women are not permitted to mix in public. Government-run schools and most public universities remain segregated, as are most Saudi weddings.

So are we supposed to applaud them? Welcome to the 18th century dickheads!

The Saudi's are not our friends and we need to get real with these ppl and stop thinking money is enough to keep loyal. This country keeps hurting us!!

Levitt_Matt Shiny objects announced should not take away from the seriousness of the Saudi situation globally re ideology. Pensacolashooting (Also: will they promote this new outlook globally to communities they helped move in the other direction?) HowWeWin

Lots of changes have taken place over a short time

Even Starbucks has more women customers here now 😀👩‍⚕️👩‍⚖☕🍵

Wow. Welcome to the 18th century Saudi Arabia. Progress!

Wow. Men AND women eating together? Crazy

Decades too late. Still operating like it’s the Middle Ages in so many other ways.

Great timing for this public relations piece. I see the Saudi propaganda team is out in full force using their wealth and power to distract us the their soldiers committed a terrorist act in the USA.

Cool story. Maybe stop killing journalists too?

Really out there on the leading edge of human rights eh, Saudi Arabia?

Welcome to the 21st century Saudi Arabia! Next guardianships!

Yes good going AP keep trying to prop up those Saudi dogs and make them look good

the 1st requisite of happiness is to abolish religion

wow! that only took 1000 years.

Great. But they still use bone saws on journalists, so...

Also one good deed doesn’t excuse atrocities such as the targeted assassination of Jamal Khashoggi. Our MSM is really eager to praise MBS as a progressive reformer overlooking the harsh repression people are still living under.

Progress is still progress ig 🤷🏻‍♂️

How about they no longer allow their citizens to Americans on US soil? That story I’ll like.

What does he want, a cookie?

A huge step forward! Welcome to the 17th century!!

Now Saudi men just have to stop shooting/stabbing Christian and Jewish people that that deem to be infidels.

Wow! Those fundamentalist islamic sharia supporting muslims, who 'let women decide' whether they wear a full body black shroud in 40 degree heat, are SO progressive. One day, women will be allowed to drink out of the same fountain & even be able to walk in front of a man

Segregating customers into groups (families, couples, groups of women) and (men only) makes for a better experience at restaurants. Because men generally behave poorly.

I'm sure this will go well for the women.

The Saudi prince is slowly initiating western style reforms, but he'll get no credit for it in America because 1) he's seen as an ally of Trump, and 2) the killing of that journalist has ruined his reputation forever.

If these men spent more time with women maybe they wouldn't be so uptight

You enter through one door, but your body will leave through several different exits.

A fine time for P.R. for its murderous traitorous Prince.

Saudi is still 100 years behind and taking faux pro-freedom for women steps out of desperation to attract tourism and lure Aramco IPO investment money Patriarchal oil kingdoms should die. Saudi can’t suddenly ‘evolve’ by imitating culture and social norms of civilized nations

It is logical. They decided to develop a tourism🙃

that's a great achievement in 2019...🤣🤣

How progressive.

Brian_Whit They're absolutely roaring into the 14th century.

Is this another distraction for the Navy campus killing? Not sure when the woman activist are going to be released

Welcome to the 20th Century.

Very good.

They’re up to the 20th century. Who knows, maybe in just sixty or seventy years they can join us in the 21st century.

Woop dee fuckin dooooo

Welcome to the Modern World

So now your selection is sitting in the 'bone saw' or 'sans bone saw' section🙄

Thank you MBS 💚

This change will take decades to become common practice with all the fake Muttawah in KSA.

I’m happy this practice was ended. The only question I have is why did it take so damn long? I really can’t think of many other places where men and women are segregated to such an extent.

Well, I guess we’ll just let bygones be bygones then ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Welcome to the 19th Century!

Let freedom ring!

Good news about time they give the woman the respect they deserve

Still dont ve out there with PDAs and hookup culture. Be respectful toward the other gender.

maybe they will start showing Uber

Now maybe they can stop killing Americans
