Humanitarian aid began flowing into Gaza via a brand new floating pier on Friday, after U.S. forces assembled and moved the piece of infrastructure into place a day earlier.The pier, part of a $320 million initiative ordered by President Joe Biden, is designed to enable the delivery of badly needed essential supplies to the Gaza Strip, where the United Nations estimates that at least a quarter of the population is on the brink of famine due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
'The pier itself has worked in peacetime environments and also in full-scale war. The challenge here is to make it work in a conflict zone where the United States is not willing to accept many casualties,' said Mark Cancian, a retired U.S. Marine Colone and senior adviser with the Center for Strategic & International Studies Security Program.'The pier will prevent hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from experiencing famine.
