On this day in 1956, reference librarian Alice Turner worked in the new, modernized reference room at the Saskatoon public library.

It’s a far cry from 1913 when in a basement room on Second Avenue, the Saskatoon Public Library opened with a total book stock of 900 volumes. Nowadays more than 80,000 are in circulation, there are 4,400 in the reference department and circulation in 1955 was 349,711The new development at the main building, is the pride and joy of the chief librarian and his staff.

For the first time, there is a proper cataloguing room. Previously the staff for this section was crowded into a small office on the main floor. The children’s section includes a spacious story room. Community groups will be able to , with its stage and accommodation for an audience of 150.
