Saskatoon Fringe: Secret Saloon celebrates 'real, live queer stories'

Activate your Online Access NowAt the start of every performance, McKechnie and Volke invite a different person from the Saskatoon queer community up on stage with them: artists, activists, parents, local drag artists and others who had expressed interest in being interviewed.

Then, the music starts, as McKechnie and Volke start riffing off their guests’ stories to improvise a totally original show.,” said Volke. “We’re not going in with the intention of trying to accurately portray their life story. The idea is, we’re going to bring you into this cozy little place — this ‘Secret Saloon,’ whatever that may be in your mind — and give you a moment to share your story and tell your truth.

“It’s kind of like the way you feel when you have the chance to be drawn by someone,” said Volke. “It’s a good feeling, but it’s weird. And I hope that people, when they leave the show, feel like they can see and sense things a little differently.”
