The Saskatchewan First Nations Chapters Spelling Bee was held Friday in Saskatoon for the eighth year.

Saskatoon’s McKenna Fineblanket has competed in every age group since 2017, when she won the primary category at eight years old and went on to win third at nationals.

as an initiative to give First Nations kids a platform to compete at a national level. For some kids, it’s also the first time they get to travel to Saskatoon. Each year, the committee sends out registration forms and information about the spelling bee to all communities. Each school selects which students will compete; some even hold their own “mini bees.” The entry fee is $50 per student, and includes a workbook to study from.Article content

“And I said, ‘You don’t know until you give them a try.’ Not everybody knows the 405 words that they’ve studied, but just getting up on stage is one thing, so I always encourage them to just try.”
