Families of the victims of the 2018 mass shooting at Santa Fe High School are outraged and disappointed that the school board voted this week to nix a proposal to build a permanent memorial on the school grounds.

Renderings show plans for a memorial to honor the ten people killed in a 2018 shooting at Santa Fe High School in Galveston County. Members of the Santa Fe Ten Memorial Foundation and relatives of the victims said they wanted the memorial built at the high school where the massacre happened. The Santa Fe ISD school board, however, voted on Monday to pursue a different location for the memorial.

"We do not want that memorial on active school district property where students and staff are there every day," he said."Overall, the board has to look out for what's best for the entire district."The school district owns 4 acres of land on 6th Street near Warpath Avenue. The board could sell this land to the City of Santa Fe, according to the attorney, for less than fair-market value.

The board's decision came after nine public speakers, including mothers of children killed in the shooting, implored the board to build the memorial at the sight of the massacre. "We do not have the luxury of putting this tragedy behind us," Stanich said."We relive it everyday and there is no escape."

Reagan Gaona, a shooting survivor whose boyfriend was killed at the school, said she was shocked, saddened and upset by the decision. "It just baffles me that the school does not want to be a part of this," she said."Santa Fe ISD should do anything and everything in their power for this memorial to come to fruition on that campus. It's the least they could do."The memorial foundation has worked for years to design and raise funds for the memorial, meeting with a school board subcommittee and other district leaders throughout the process, Claussen said.
