Sandra Bullock opens up about her positive experience working with Netflix and the freedom it has given her. After making her film debut in the 1987 action thriller Hangmen, Bullock rose to global prominence with roles in the science fiction film Demolition Man and box office hit Speed. Bullock has enjoyed a long and successful career, starring in dozens of movies, including critically and commercially successful projects such as Gravity, Ocean's 8, and A Time to Kill.
Additionally, following her first major production credit with Hope Floats back in 1998, Bullock's company Fortis Films has been involved in several movies over the past 20 years. These include one of two hugely successful films distributed by Netflix and starring Bullock, The Unforgivable. The other, Bird Box, was a hit for the streamer as well.
The perk of Netflix is that they let me work, and they let me choose material that never would have made it into the theaters. Streaming platforms have become the creative hub of choice for many stars in recent times, and since the pandemic, the strength and popularity of these streamers have never been higher. As the competition escalates, companies have to find more ways of standing out, and this means upping their game content-wise. The environment Netflix provides seems to be a positive one for stars to explore more alternative projects, which Bullock's comments support.
How much audiences might see Bullock working with Netflix again in the future is difficult to say at this point. But, there is little doubt that the creative freedom and originality the platform offers is something that appeals to her. Bullock is taking a break from acting for the time being, but it sounds like she's very open to working with Netflix again in the future.
Netflix features only make into the bare minimum number of theatres for a week to be eligible for awards. It’s a huge frustration for independent cinemas who can’t show the audience what they want to see.
