SAN JOSE — Police are investigating the death of a man Friday who was gravely injured nearly a month earlier when he ran a red light while riding a motorcycle that was reported stolen.

In the city’s 38th traffic death of 2022, the motorcyclist was seriously hurt when crashing into an SUV at around 8:54 p.m. on June 3 at the intersection of Monterey Road and Branham Lane, a San Jose police press release said. The man, riding a 2005 Suzuki motorcycle, was heading north on Monterey Road when he ran a red light at the intersection, running into a 2002 Mercury SUV, which was occupied by the lone adult male driver, police said. The motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the Mercury was apparently not injured and stayed at the scene to cooperate with police. The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries and died July 1 at the hospital, police said. His identity has not be released, as authorities wait to notify his family. Since the start of the year, there have been 36 deadly collisions in San Jose, with 38 total deaths.

Anyone with information on this investigation is asked to contact Det Templeman of the San José Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit at 3556@sanjoseca.gov or 408-277-4654.
