The San Francisco Police Department said it would like the option to deploy robots equipped with explosive charges to disable suspects when lives are at stake.

SAN FRANCISCO — Supervisors in San Francisco voted Tuesday to give city police the ability to use potentially lethal, remote-controlled robots in emergency situations but not until after an emotionally charged debate that reflected divisions on the politically liberal board over support for law enforcement.

"Robots equipped in this manner would only be used in extreme circumstances to save or prevent further loss of innocent lives," she said. The state law was authored last year by San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu while he was an assembly member. It is aimed at giving the public a forum and voice in the acquisition and use of military-grade weapons that have a negative effect on communities, according to the legislation.

Like many places around the U.S., San Francisco is trying to balance public safety with treasured civilian rights such as privacy and the ability to live free of excessive police oversight. In September, supervisors agreed to a trial run allowing police to access in real time private surveillance camera feeds in certain circumstances.

I guess they don't really know how to hand the 'crap' the governor created and this is the only solution as opposed to allowing police to 'police '

hmm...that sounds like a wasted taxpayers' money, how about robots that serve 5 types of drugs? that kinda suits it better.

This isn’t something new, you just haven’t heard of it happening. Numerous cities have used bomb squad robots in deadly force scenarios. It’s safer sending in an armed robot with a standoff weapon or an explosive charge.

I'm a liberal but how is this a SF liberal policy?

Great idea. 👍 For everyone crying & complaining ... don't break the law & you won't have to worry. Officers put their lives on the line for all of us every day. If this helps them do their job while keeping them safe, so be it. 👍💙

🤣🤣 thats what happens when you defund the police !! No pensions no health care needed 🤣🤣

Ok RoboCop 😂 soo all along the movies people created weren’t just imagined, they were messages or images sent from who knows where to warn us. Because where does the imagination come from Alex_Serves

Lazy cowards

Good thing there are lots of stairs in SF

San Francisco ridiculed over 'laughable' push for robot police: 'Taking policy decisions' from 'Terminator'Duke University Professor Sultan Meghji voiced opposition to the plan that would allow unmanned robots to use deadly force when in situations deemed too dangerous for a human. I’m sure the Street population will quickly learn to disassemble them. Grrrrrreat but one thing AI lacks is consciousness, empathy, and compassion and that’s really the last thing we need armed on the streets. How easily can they be hacked?

San Francisco debates letting police deploy robots that killThe Democratic San Francisco Board of Supervisors are heatedly debating a policy to allow police to use potentially lethal, remote-controlled robots in emergency situations. They did this in Dallas already. It blew up a shooter held up in a parking garage. I'm sure the shooter was surprised to see the robot with a grenade right before it blew them both up.
