A former employee at San Diego Workforce Partnership sued the organization and CEO Peter Callstrom. An anonymous letter was also sent to the nonprofit's policy board with additional allegations.

San Diego Workforce Partnership, a countywide nonprofit that provides career services, and its CEO Peter Callstrom are being sued by a former employee for alleged discrimination, racism and harassment in the workplace.

In a written statement provided by Callstrom’s lawyer, Adam Rosenthal, said that his client denies the claims of the lawsuit and the anonymous letter. Days after the anonymous letter was sent, the nonprofit’s policy board met in a special closed session meeting on Nov. 21 to discuss “significant exposure to litigation,”. Callstrom, who has served as the organization’s top executive since 2012, was placed on a leave of absence on Nov. 22, according to Gaines’ lawsuit.

A few months into the job, her supervisor left the organization, the lawsuit says, and Gaines began reporting directly to Callstrom in September 2021. After this conversation, Gaines said in the lawsuit that Callstrom treated her differently. The lawsuit alleges Callstrom removed her from leading the nonprofit’s diversity-focused board committee and excluded her from executive team meetings.
