The National Weather Service says it appears that San Diego is likely to be unseasonably cool on the Fourth of July, with the daytime high only reaching 69 — five degrees below average.
A low-pressure system that’s currently about 500 miles off the West Coast will move ashore late Sunday, sending lots of cool, moist air ashore on Monday. The wind-driven moisture could produce upwelling, which brings colder, deeper water to the surface. The phenomenon can limit heating along the coast.
“The average high doesn’t change much in the summer,” said Joe Cordero, a weather service forecaster. “But we could have a swing and this could be one of the cooler Fourth of Julys we’ve had in years.” A reading of 69 would represent the coolest Fourth July in San Diego since 2012, when the temperature was only 67. The coolest Fourth on record occurred in 1902, when San Diego had a population of about 20,000.The trough will produce more coastal clouds. But Cordero says it doesn’t appear that a thick marine layer will form before fireworks shows go off across the county.
Will be heading to San Diego from Southern AZ! Excited for the cooler weather! Going to Padres game on the 4th!
