As Ms. Wheelchair Texas, she’ll be able to travel the state to talk with local government and business officials about how to improve accessibility. It also gives her a platform to raise awareness and educate people on the importance of inclusion.
To be eligible to compete in Texas, applicants must be at least 21 years old, be reliant on a wheelchair at all times when in public and have lived in Texas for at least six months, says Angel Arredondo, president of the Ms. Wheelchair Texas Foundation.in a quest to take her advocacy national. Though the final number of competitors has yet to be solidified, Arredondo said the national event has drawn competitors from 20 to 30 states in the past.
She wants recreational sites to think beyond the ADA requirement. For example, she said going to Natural Bridge Caverns might be possible for people in wheelchairs if an all-terrain wheelchair was available on site for guests to use. “We shouldn’t be put in a box and only allowed certain experiences because we have a disability,” Durso said. “We should be able to have a fully inclusive, fully immersive experience just like anybody else.”
