May is the peak of severe weather season in Texas, typically bringing very large hail across all parts of the state. This May, it’s been worse than normal, with very large hail hitting the state with a much higher frequency than what we’re used to. Here are the numbers. So far this May, the National Weather Service has issued 107 individual storm reports for hail of at least 2 inches in diameter.
A few very large hail reports are expected in this region Wednesday evening, but it won’t be as widespread as areas farther to the north. Farther south, from Austin to San Antonio and into the Hill Country, only a level 1 of 5 risk of severe weather exists. Here, the likelihood of any storms developing is very low, but if one were to develop, could still drop large hail. That being said, San Antonio’s overall rain chances are only 10%, meaning the vast majority of us will stay dry and hail-free.
