While this trend could be partly due to how rates are calculated – since one student’s action from a smaller school makes a bigger difference to the percentage – these schools have also worked hard to encourage civic engagement. “We want kids to go out and be looking for ways to serve rather than looking for ways to be served,” Eickstead said, “And it changes your whole culture.”
