After two months of contract negotiations — which kicked off with optimism from both sides — the city of San Antonio and its firefighters union have hit a wall. Neither has budged much from their initial salary proposals, so the city suggested Friday that they use nonbinding mediation to hammer out a new contract. “We’re just too far apart between the two proposals,” Deputy City Manager María Villagómez said.
Both of those proposals would keep police and fire spending below 66% of the city’s general fund budget, Jones said, in keeping with a Sculley-era policy that the council has adopted without fail since 2014. It requires budget writers not to exceed that limit so public safety doesn’t crowd out spending on street work, libraries, senior centers and other priorities. The union’s proposals are “unrealistic” and not affordable for the city, Villagómez said.
