Census Bureau News

Houston was still the nation’s fourth-largest city with San Antonio at No. 7. Dallas remained the ninth-largest city and Austin slipped a spot to No. 11.

San Antonio reclaimed its spot as the nation’s fastest-growing city in 2023, the Census Bureau said Thursday, with a gain of about 22,000 people pushing the city’s population to just shy of 1.5 million. It was followed by Fort Worth , which added more than 21,000 people to finish the year with a population of 978,000. Houston added nearly 12,000 people — No. 7 by numerical growth — to reach 2.31 million.

San Antonio was the nation’s fastest-growing big city during the pandemic “The population growth across the South in 2023 was driven by significant numeric and percentage gains among its cities,” said Crystal Delbé, a statistician in the Census Bureau’s Population Division. “Thirteen of the 15 fastest-growing cities were in the South, with eight in Texas alone.” North Texas’ Celina topped the list with a 26.6% increase, more than 53 times that of the nation’s population growth rate of 0.5%.

Lone Star State tops 30 million people for the first time With about 1.3 million residents, Dallas remained the ninth-largest, but Austin, with 980,000 people, slipped to No. 11 as it was surpassed by Jacksonville, Fla. Fort Worth, with about 978,500 residents, jumped past San Jose, Calif., to become the nation’s 12th-most populous. Cities in the South grew the fastest in every category measured, according to the census. Cities with populations of 50,000 or more grew by 1%.
