The Texas Commission for Environmental Quality has declared Sunday an ozone action day.SAN ANTONIO — Sunday will be yet another ozone action day for the San Antonio area, according to the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality — the fifth straight day and the 14th this year that ozone pollution will reach potentially harmful levels.
A statement from San Antonio Metropolitan Health encourages vulnerable residents like young children, the elderly and those with afflictions affecting breathing — like asthma, bronchitis or emphysema — to stay indoors. Ozone is a harmful, smoglike substance that comes from nitrogen dioxide and volatile organic compounds produced by construction, some industries and vehicles, as well as heat and sunlight.The TCEQ urges residents to prevent ozone pollution by sharing rides, riding bicycles and avoiding drive-thru lanes or other reasons to idle vehicle engines. Residents should refuel cars and trucks after 6 p.m. and set their thermostats 2 to 3 degrees higher from 2 to 7 p.m.
