A new nursing school campus in downtown Oakland is close to taking a big step toward construction.

SMU’s existing Oakland campus hosts 1,300 students and 300 faculty and staff, per staff reports. The university has satellite campuses in San Mateo, Sacramento and Fresno.

The campus represents the second phase of a two-part project being developed by Strada, which entered into a disposition and development agreement for approximately 1.25 acres of city-owned land bounded by 11th, Clay, 12th and Broadway in late 2015. The developer successfully completed the first phase, a 288-unit apartment tower with ground-floor retail and a 12,000-square-foot public plaza, in 2020.

The extension also removed Oakland’s obligation to convey the site to Strada; Oakland will instead plan to retain ownership of the site and enter into a ground lease with SMU. Members of Oakland’s current City Council have expressed a preference for retaining ownership of city-owned land in recent months, arguing the city should have control over valuable public assets.
