The Sam Houston High School JROTC presents the colors at the Friends of Sam Houston High School annual community scholarship breakfast at the Second Baptist Church Community Center on Saturday morning. SAN ANTONIO — Coach Raymond “R. A.” Johnson believed in rules, regulations and guidelines.

The endowment is one of three grants that’s been awarded to students from the school, known as the “Pride of the East Side.” The R.A. Johnson scholarships are awarded to a male and female student athlete at Sam Houston High. This years recipients were seniors Amya Miller-Singleton and Elton Anderson. Amya, captain of her basketball team, has a 3.3 grade point average. Elton, a varsity soccer player, tutors several classmates from Honduras so the team can remain academically eligible to play.

Sharene Dixon, the high school’s principal, lauded students who went through the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic but still showed the “tenacity to do whatever they want to do.”
