Salt Lake City police were asking people to avoid a street in the city's Capitol Hill district after a bear was sighted in a tree.
Officers with the city's police department, along with authorities from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, closed off Reed Avenue near 300 West near Warm Springs Park, where the black bear could be seen rummaging around in the upper limbs of a giant cottonwood."At 7:40 a.m., our SLC 911 dispatch received a call about a bear," said SLCPD public information officer Yayer Javaid. "Our officers responded, and found a bear.
He said wildlife authorities were strategizing to safely tranquilize the bear and ensure the animal and officers remained safe throughout the process. The bear would then be transported away from the city. Residents were asked to stay in their homes, he said. And the public at large was asked to avoid the area until the operation was complete."We don't want to escalate the situation," he said.
"For safety reasons, we are especially asking people with small pets to remain inside with those animals," according to a statement issued at about 8:30 a.m. by the police department. The neighborhood sits near the base of Ensign Peak at one of the city's most northern points, where the city meets the mountains.
