Among the first to be free from the strictures that defined Navy life during Covid-19, a crew of U.S. sailors took 'liberty' ashore. In a tourist town in the Black Sea, they found the pandemic wasn't done with them after all.

BATUMI, Georgia—A group of U.S. sailors walked down the gangplank into this town along the Black Sea last month, free at last from the quarantines and strictures that had defined Navy life during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Behind them, geopolitical tensions were on pause: The Russian naval frigate assigned to shadow them across the Black Sea waited miles off shore for them to get back under way. Ahead lay two days of eating, drinking and carousing in this palm tree-lined coastal city, of shopping in quaint markets, mingling with the locals and sleeping in real beds.
