Members of the school's Jewish community made their requests peacefully months ago, but were ignored, two Congressmen allege.

In a letter sent to Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway, U.S. Reps. Donald Norcross and Josh Gottheimer said a group of Jewish faculty members in December — about two months after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas War — asked Rutgers administrators for several protections and other requests on campus.

“We are concerned that the administration’s acquiescence to questionable demands made by protesters failed to adequately take into account perspectives and voices of members of the Jewish community at Rutgers,” said the letter from Norcross, D-1st Dist., and Gottheimer, D-5th Dist. The university did not agree with protesters’ demands to divest its investments from companies doing business in Israel, a move Holloway opposes, or to sever its ties with Tel Aviv University, the president has said. But it did agree to creating a Palestinian cultural center, staff trainings and additional course offerings, among other items., telling the Rutgers Board of Governors Monday the “result of our actions was a peaceful return to the normal course of business.

“If you’re going to sit down with one group of students,” Murphy said while visiting Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, “what about the Jewish students who gave a set of demands back in December? You owe everybody their seat at the table.”“I think there’s a huge missed opportunity in these protests, the opportunity was to forcefully fight and advocate for a comprehensive two-state solution,” Murphy said.
