Russia on Tuesday defended its destruction of a satellite with a missile, after U.S. officials said the weapon test endangered astronauts on the International Space Station

A Russian missile hit a satellite, producing 1,500 pieces of trackable debris in orbit as well as hundreds of thousands of smaller fragments, according to the State Department. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday the test had been successful in hitting an inoperative Russian spacecraft, which had been in orbit since 1982, according to the Defense Ministry.
