TOKYO—Nikita Nagornyy, a 24-year old Russian who has emerged as the new ruler of men’s gymnastics in recent years, had a secret: a never-before performed element known as the triple back pike.
Between filming quarantine pranks with his gymnast wife during the pandemic, Nagornyy learned how to do the move—which features three somersaults backwards with the body bent at the waist and knees straight—in training. But because there were no major competitions, he couldn’t share it with the world for months.
“Who suggested that I do this triple somersault? The coronavirus is to blame for everything,” Nagornyy said. “The first time I tried it on a trampoline, I kept in my head the idea that it is possible to do it on the floor in competitions.” When he finally debuted the move in April, the International Gymnastics Federation named the element after him. The Nagornyy was born.
