ROME — Italy on Monday signed a declaration of intent with Algeria to buy more of its natural gas and wean itself off Russian energy.
“Right after Ukraine’s invasion, I said that Italy would swiftly act to reduce our dependence on Russian natural gas,” Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said after meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers. “Our government is working to protect citizens and business from the consequences of the conflict.”
The trip, following up on Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio’s Feb. 28 visit to the North African country, marks one of the most significant attempts by Italy to start weaning itself off Russian supplies and shelter itself from any Russian retaliation over its sanctions on President Vladimir Putin’s regime.Italy relies on imports for more than 95 percent of its natural gas, the government says.
“In the past month and a half, I’ve been to Algeria, Qatar, Angola, Mozambique and Azerbaijan,” Di Maio said Sunday as he detailed Italy’s efforts to strengthen energy partnerships and diversify its supply.Bullet
