The Russian ministry said Wednesday that its Black Sea Fleet and the border patrol of the nation’s Federal Security Service had to fire shots to stop HMS Defender from further violating Russia’s territorial waters.
But the U.K. government denied the report, saying the ship was “innocently” passing through Ukrainian waters. U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement posted on Twitter that the destroyer entered an internationally recognized traffic separation corridor before exiting. “As is routine, Russian vessels shadowed her passage and she was made aware of training exercises in her wider vicinity,” he said.
He later told a parliamentary committee that the ship was “hailed” by Russian authorities and informed of a Russian training exercise nearby, and added that the British ambassador in Russia hadn’t been summoned.
