Ukraine’s nuclear power provider accused Russia of “kidnapping” the head of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, a facility occupied by Russian troops and located in a region of Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin has moved to annex illegally.

He called Putin’s decision to take over more territory – Russia now claims sovereignty over 15% of Ukraine – “the largest attempted annexation of European territory by force since the Second World War.”

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said Ukraine likely will retake another key Russian-occupied city in the country’s east in the next few days. Ukrainian forces already have encircled the city of Lyman, some 160 kilometers southeast of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.Citing Russian reports, the institute said it appeared Russian forces were retreating from Lyman.

Ukraine also is making “incremental” gains around Kupiansk and the eastern bank of the Oskil River, which became a key front line since the Ukrainian counteroffensive regained control of the Kharkiv region in September. In a daily intelligence briefing, the British Defense Ministry highlighted an attack Friday in the city of Zaporizhzhia that killed 30 people and wounded 88 others.

cont'd ...which is controlled by Russian forces but operated by its Ukrainian staff. Director General Grossi remains deeply concerned about the repeated occurrence of such landmine explosions near the plant.

The explosions did not result in any direct impact on the safety or security systems of the ZNPP. Today’s explosions indicate a continued rise in the number of landmine explosions reported this week outside the perimeter fence of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, ...

Separately today, IAEA experts present at the ZNPP reported that several explosions were again heard in the vicinity of the plant. As with the previous explosions reported by the IAEA this week, they are believed to have been caused by landmines.

Putin doubtless views this as strengthening his position. He now has the plant AND someone who can run it. No disrespect to my Russian friends...especially those who can't leave.

The people gladly voted to join the federation.

I'm tired of this war

Everybody tried to paint Putin as a madman and disolve all of his obvious achievements. Now he will leave Zelenskyy scratching his head. Ukraine should negotiate. Putin is just getting started with his options list.
