Russell Wilson is now the NFL's highest-paid player

Share to twitterSEATTLE, WA - SEPTEMBER 21: Quarterback Russell Wilson #3 of the Seattle Seahawks celebrates a touchdown pass to Marshawn Lynch in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos at CenturyLink Field on September 21, 2014 in Seattle, Washington. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson had previously set an April 15 deadline to sign a contract extension with the team.

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN - DECEMBER 30: Aaron Rodgers #12 of the Green Bay Packers reacts in the first quarter against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field on December 30, 2018 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Wilson’s average of $35 million bests the four-year, $134 million deal Aaron Rodgers signed with the Green Bay Packers last August. His total value of $140 million is second to only Atlanta Falcons signal caller Matt Ryan,Wilson’s $65 million signing bonus ranks first among NFL players.

Realistically, it’s a move that the Seahawks needed to make. They couldn’t afford to let their franchise player head into the 2019 season in limbo. Prior to adding four years on to his deal, Wilson was set to become a free agent next march. That can now be thrown out the window. Statistically, Wilson has been a phenomenon. Last season alone, he completed nearly 66 percent of his passes for 3,448 yards with 35 touchdowns compared to just seven interceptions. In seven seasons, he’s tallied 212 total touchdowns compared to 63 interceptions.
