Runner Mary Cain Said She Was 'Emotionally and Physically Abused' As a Nike Athlete

, who fell from the top of her game after she signed with Nike when she was a teen, said it's not just the former coach that harmed her, but the overarching system that female Nike athletes face.Mary said she was the fastest girl in the U.S. until Salazar started training her and encouraging her to lose weight, and publicly shaming her when she didn't.

"He would usually weigh me in front of my teammates and publicly shame me if I wasn't hitting weight," Mary continued. "He wanted to give me birth control pills and diuretics...the latter of whichBecause of her restrictive diet and high level of physical activity, Mary said she developed, a condition that can result in decreased bone mineral density, loss of one's period, and can manifest as disordered eating.
