Ruling in lawsuit accusing Harris County of unfair bail practices coming soon, judge says

In 2022, 27 people died while in Harris County Jail's custody, including Smith's 38-year-old daughter, Kristan Smith.

Deborah Smith spoke during a news conference Wednesday about how her 38-year-old daughter, Kristan, died while in the custody of Harris County Jail in 2022.Kristan Smith died nearly a month after being booked into the Harris County Jail on April 27, 2022, on an aggravated assault charge. As a diabetic, she needed insulin and a glucose meter, two things her mother claims she wasn't adequately provided during her stay.

"She was not jail material, and had never been incarcerated," Smith said."I never thought I'd be in this position about mine. So bail is important."JAIL DEATHS:Pierson recalled never"getting comfortable" during his stays at Harris County Jail, including in 2018 when he was booked on cocaine possession charges. While Pierson does have prior felony drug charges stemming back to 1990, court records show he stayed out of jail for 26 years up until 2018.

Hai Son Bui, the founder of We the People Organize, said Truong still can't feel anything from the waist down after being attacked during a robbery on Feb. 13. She was paralyzed after a suspect followed her 23 miles from the Bank of America ATM to Bellaire Blvd and"body slammed her," he stated.
