Ross Douthat: Trumpism is not strong enough to consolidate power in the United States.

President Joe Biden talks to reporters as he arrives on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington on Sept. 1, 2022. Strip away the weird semi-fascist optics, the creepy crimson lighting and the Marines standing sentinel, and the speech Joe Biden gave on Thursday night outside Philadelphia’s Independence Hall could have been given by other prominent Democrats throughout the Trump era, Ross Douthat writes.

The speech’s warning against eroding democratic norms was delivered a week after Biden’s own semi-Caesarist announcement of a $500 billion student-loan forgiveness plan without consulting Congress.

Or his condemnations of political violence could have encompassed the worst of the May and June 2020 rioting, the recent wave of vandalism at crisis pregnancy centers or the assassination plot against Justice Brett Kavanaugh as well as MAGA threats. For actual evidence supporting such a belief, I recommend reading Julian G. Waller’s essay “Authoritarianism Here?” in the spring 2022 issue of the journal American Affairs.

really displaying zero understanding of how anti-democratic institutions like the electoral college, the senate, and the capped house of reps actually are. pretty easy for a minority fascist movement to gain control

Biden is a alien

And not smart enough

They said the same about a German leader who was sent to prison then came back, to 'Make Germany Great Again' some 90 years ago. The threat is real.

Biden doesn't know what day it is, 'Trumpism' might not be but conservative principles and Republican values properly portrayed and implemented ARE! Look seriously and not though iberal filter lens,at redstate crime, economy's and covid leadership as examples.

No one is threatening Ross's vote. What's the problem?

the Trib once again doing the one thing they have to stop doing if they want me to pay for their paper: republishing bad faith right wingers like Ross Douthat

I you just picking this opinion piece to gain clicks? It’s a ridiculous argument and should not have been republished in SLTrib.

Since fascist in the GOP control the majority of state legislatures, school boards, county commissions, police boards, half the US Senate and almost half the US House ,the authors observations are out of touch with reality.

Douthat is an apologist for the right wing. There is no compromising with Facism.

RepublicansHateAmerica BoycottCNN 😂🖕🏽😂

BS!

Douthat must not have watched even one minute of the Jan 6 committee public testimony.

Biden, who wants to end the filibuster, pack the court, rules by dictate, prosecutes political opposition and mandates experimental medicine, has a lot of nerve
