by Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, Rombauer ensured that there won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year.

Trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Flavien Prat, the colt covered the 1 3/16 miles on a fast dirt track in 1:53.62. Rombauer, a 3-year-old son of Twirling Candy and the mare Cashmere, is owned by John and Diane Fradkin. Saturday’s 146th running of the Preakness Stakes took place after it was revealed that the Bob Baffert-trained Derby winner Medina Spirit had tested positive for betamethasone, an anti-inflammatory drug that isn’t permissible to be in a horse’s system on race day.to run after Baffert agreed to expanded testing and monitoring of his horses in Baltimore.

A split sample from Kentucky—collected at the time of the first sample—could wipe out Medina Spirit’s Derby title. NBC reported that results of the test aren’t expected until after the June 5 Belmont Stakes. The matter would likely be appealed if the horse were to be disqualified.
