With the NBA draft complete and the free agency marketplace to open on Thursday, the Rockets reached a decision on one piece of business to address with their returning roster.
The Rockets will pick up their option on the third season of forward Jae’Sean Tate’s contract by Wednesday’s deadline, a person with knowledge of the decision said. Tate will earn $1.9 million in the final season of the contract he signed as an undrafted free agent. He played one season in Belgium and one season in Australia out of Ohio State before signing with the Rockets.
Tate, 26, has averaged 11.6 points in 148 games in his first two seasons, making 50.1 percent of his shots and averaging 5.4 rebounds. A 6-4 forward, he is considered among the Rockets best defensive players and playmakers. Tate, an All-Rookie first team selection in 2020-21, is the fifth player in NBA history to reach his totals for points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and 3-pointers through the first 148 games of his career, joining Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Lamar Odom and LeBron James.
