JUST IN: Rochester’s mayor removes the police chief ahead of his retirement this month, citing a preliminary review into the death of Daniel Prude, a Black man who died after having been put in a 'spit hood' and restrained by officers in March.

The mayor said she was requesting for the U.S. Attorney’s Office to conduct an investigation into whether Prude’s civil rights were violated as well as looking into engaging an outside agency to investigate the conduct and training of the Rochester police department.

The City of Rochester posted a memo summarizing the deputy mayor's cursory review into the Prude case as well as 323 pages of supporting documents. The deputy mayor's review summary alleged a"culture of insularity, acceptance and, quite frankly, callousness that permeates the Rochester Police Department."earlier this month and claimed that they show that officers used excessive force.

The videos show that officers found Prude naked in the middle of a street shortly after 3 a.m. March 23. Prude complied with orders to get on the ground face down and put his hands behind his back, the video shows. At one point, it appeared that Prude had stopped breathing. Paramedics tried to revive him, and he was put on life support at a hospital. He died seven days later.

For victims of police violence, family spokespeople emerge to carry legacies, spur actionJacob Blake’s uncle, Daniel Prude’s brother and others are hoping to make change out of tragedy By accounts this guy was tazzed twice repeatedly told to stop and went reaching into his car. If correct the cops followed procedure. They also have a right to go home to their families. He could have been reaching for an automatic. What about police who are victims of criminal violence? What of victims’ legacies committed by some of these so-called martyrs? How many of these “victims” have violent criminal histories, did not comply with police commands/resisted arrest or worse, pulled a weapon? How many would be ALIVE today had they complied?
