The Force was a little less strong with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

This image released by Lucasfilm shows Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, left, and Daisy Ridley as Rey in a scene from "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker."

That response may have muted what could have been a record-setting weekend. While Disney had cautiously estimated about a $165 million opening, analysts had pegged “The Rise of Skywalker” for around $200 million. With the coming holiday period, “Rise of Skywalker” is poised to dominate the year's most lucrative week of moviegoing. Cathleen Taff, distribution chief for Disney, called it a great start.

Such expectations did not await Tom Hooper's adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's “Cats.” The much ridiculed big-screen musical, featuring infamous “digital fur technology,” scratched out just $6.5 million in ticket sales, sending Mr. Mistoffelees home licking their wounds. In November, Disney chief executive Bob Iger told investors that “Star Wars” will go “into a hiatus” after “Rise of Skywalker.” The next “Star Wars” movie, which is to be set outside the Skywalker saga, isn't scheduled for release until 2022. “Game of Thrones” makers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently pulled out of planned “Star Wars” trilogy.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, said the opening for “Rise of Skywalker” could only be considered a disappointment for Disney. The film will likely become Disney's seventh $1 billion release of the year and give the studio seven of the top 10 films of the year.

It was out of loyalty to the brand.. My loyalty is to George Lucas and the original cast. The young woman who plays the new Skywalker was an excellent idea, unfortunately Abrams is a horrible director and writer..

I loved this movie

Tell us some real news ABC. Tell us how your home state of New York has now legalized abortion up until birth and the Democrats celebrated by lighting up the buildings in pink.

Disney ruined Star Wars.

Who's surprised by Cats?

Weekend before Christmas does not seem like the ideal time to release a movie...

It was a great movie that is worth re-watching at least two or three times in theaters. Definitely go watch this film and don’t pay attention to the nasty critics.

Disney is garbage now.

never have seen ANY of them

It's wild that a dollar's amount that used to signal a successful total run is now looked down upon because they 'only' made that much... In one weekend.

Why is this a problem? Last Star Wars movie. It will easily still gross billions of $$. Big deal how much it made on opening weekend.

Don't say , really !!!

You have to form your own opinion. Critics can sway people into not going or delay seeing to a movie. I personally loved StarWarsTheRiseofSkywalker . They could have made it into two parts as far as I'm concerned. I don't put much faith in movie reviews.

I'll take the Anakin trilogy over the other two any day of the week

This series junped the shark eons ago..

They should have destroyed the milenum falcom, at least they hinted...

Is toxic masculinity drone, Luke Skywalker even in it?

Star Wars Was Awesome ☘️❤️☘️ Im a huge Fan. 39 years now since I saw The Empire Strikes Back in Theatre , when I was old enough, seen all since Watched the Originals 100s of times growing up. And Still can watch today

The girl power movement of Hollywood continues to fail.

So they let the evil survive.

It was ok

Enjoyed it way more than TLJ

Cats has its own audience and( 4.4 million hardly a flop)!

ИЗ КОМПЬЮТЕРА НЕ СДЕЛАЕШЬ НАСТОЯЩИЙ ФИЛЬМ

ЧТО ЗА ХРЕНЬ

They made Rey too powerful right from the start. Half the fun of these shows is watching the hero on their arc. Imagine Neo beating up Agent Smith in scene 1 of the Matrix or if Rocky just knocked everyone out without breaking a sweat.

You sell your soul to the mouse you get the hole.

Best Star Wars since Return of the Jedi.

Cats failing is the most predictable outcome of the year

Studios need to learn America is tired of politically correct woke shows, in theaters and on television.

Lol at Cats flopping who thought that movie was a good idea anyways?

I really liked the movie. I haven’t figured out what people didn’t like.

It’s been weak since episode 1 was released.

It’s a great movie!
