RiseofSkywalker dominates box office, but future of StarWars may lie in streaming

. Buoyed by that success, Lucasfilm is moving along with other Disney Plus shows set in a galaxy far, far away, including one featuring Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. This flurry of activity indicates that Star Wars’ future may not lie in cinemas. It may be in streaming.

As these companies pin their hopes on converting moviegoers to streaming subscribers, they do so as the theatrical movie business is constricting. Domestic ticket sales are down 5% from 2018 and attendance has more or less flatlined over the past decade. At the same time, the number of streaming subscribers continues to grow, with the top subscription video services on-demandin 2018, a more than $4 billion year-over-year increase.

that the film served as a coda of sorts, but he also expressed a belief that the world that George Lucas first unveiled 42 years ago would continue to spin forward.

Because it was slopy plot writing and sucked.

The salt of the ROS haters gives me sustenance. 🤣

I was going to see it every week in January and twice on opening day. I cancelled my second ticket and will use the potential money for a good cause. I'm not giving any more money to these fucks. I'll pirate the OT if I have to.

I’ve seen it twice and will go see it several more times. It’s a great movie, I loved it

I liked it and plan on seeing it again.

They killed off their most marketable character KyloRen. There could’ve been a more creative way for him to be redeemed without killing him. Let him ride off into the sunset with Rey. How great would that have been?

Not sure if there’s a name for it already but the thing Rey and Kylo got goin’ on feels like it should be called ForceTiming. Like FaceTime, only works with iPhones, ForceTime can only be used between Jedi. Seems plausible to me 🤷🏼‍♂️ StarWarsTheRiseofSkywalker ⚔️

No surprises. FA was the first SW film in nearly 2 decades. And LJ felt the brunt of that. I think with the releases of Solo and Rogue One. A bit of fatigue with the audience. Still $176 mill relatively very strong

ReyloDawn Yeah that's because no one took the time to care about the writing and characters and instead tried to be as flashy as possible

Fuck them for killing the true heroe if the ST.

I enjoyed the movie, but I'm in the BenSoloDeservedBetter camp. After all, BenSolo was the last Skywalker.

I actually made it to three viewings but had to be intoxicated to watch it 😬

Fuck Ben Solo! Nobody remembers Vader as kind man just because he redeemed himself for 10 min. Ben Solo was a cry baby just like Luke. I enjoyed seeing them both fade out.

I get that the movie leaves a lot to be desired, but trying to refund your tickets after having already seen it? What a bunch of babies.

Now do the original trilogy.

We refunded tickets! You don’t kill hope. You don’t ruin the happy ending. You don’t retcon characters back stories. You don’t get to change a character into a spice runner. BenSoloDeservedBetter ReyDeservedBetter

Mowsyling I only saw the movie once and I regret it

Disney took a dying franchise that was running off of its name and killed it

So I saw the movie four days ago. Imagine me trying not to cry when receiving a StarWars poster on Christmas. Incredible how they ended up making a thing about hope so utterly hopeless.

Because Last Jedi’s fucking casino planet made more sense than this entire dumpster fire of a movie, next question

I had booked multiple viewings, once was more than enough. And I got a refund for that one.

*SPOILER* An authentic happy ending and life for a good person is what people pay to see. Seems like there is morality left within people that Didney starwars did not posess. If you change that ending and bring it back to the cinemas I will watch it FIVE TIMES.

I plan to go a least another time... I only went once to the previous two. I’m not one to go to a film more than once in theatre... Real life is busy.

I saw The Force Awakens 8 times in theaters, then The Last Jedi 13 times. The Rise of Skywalker? Once was more than enough. Dragging Leia and Luke through the dirt, then killing Ben Solo saved be a few hundred dollars in movie tickets, so thanks...? DisneyStudios jjabrams

Hey Variety, maybe it's because Star Wars taught us hope and compassion, and this movie HAD NONE! Watching IX was like watching a nihilist movie cobble together a ton of nostalgia while committing character assassination and racist stereotypes, then call itself 'Star Wars.'

Did people really think he was going to live? He was a character made to die and deserved it in the end. Great performance.

It happens when a movie is that bad. Wouldn't rewatch it even if they pay me *shrugs

Hey what do you want ?They killed Ben Solo the last Skywalker...

BenSoloDeservesBetter BenSoloMustLive BenDeservesBetter BenSoloIsUs

Omg i wonder if its cuz the script sucked

I was readind the Time magazine issue of Star Wars and one of the thing it shows, is that except for Episode 2 and 3. Every SW movie made less money then the last one. And is kinda interesting how people talk shit about this new trilogy. But, it always happen.

Reylo4Life TheRiseOfSkywalker has the most dissapointing ending ever. And I watched GameofThrones BenSoloDeservedBetter BenSolo BenSoloIsUs

Thats what happends when JJ, Chris, KK, Disney & LG, killed our beloved character, Ben Solo & have the awful ending of TROS & dissapointment closure to the Skywalker saga.

My friends and I plan to see her again after the premiere at midnight but after seeing how terrible and incongruous it was we canceled the next show. Adam Driver deserved more than 4 minutes of dialogue.

Had plans to see it twice the Friday after it released, once every weekend it was in theaters & Christmas Day, just like I did with The Last Jedi. Since the movie was just a reboot of episode 7 & 8 I’ve just been donating my ticket money instead of seeing it ever again. starwars

originally planned to see it again next day, opted not to... just one anecdote, but don't think this movie has a lot of rewatch value for a casual fan either... barely stands out from any other whirlwind action popcorn flick with stilted characters. wasted opportunity.

aka y’all fuckin up Disney starwars

Just saw, loved it.

Because they destroyed so many characters

Hmmm that’s because a lousy movie. Visually it looked great but the rest🤷‍♂️

I haven’t seen it yet I just don’t want to ruin the good vibes I have from the Mandalorian but will go after New Years

Nah, it made 433 M

Yea, I’m not watching that again. What a depressing movie - not the emotions I want at Christmas.

People vote with their wallets, Disney. MerryChristmas

I had to explain to a crying child that Ben died. We can’t take our nephew as promised. Disney release an alt HEA!!!

Shittest ending ever I gonnavomit

Honestly watching BenSolo was freaking terrible, even more considering all the extra material they released about him before this movie. I legit doubt anyone would want to rewatch It after it made us cry like heck, near Christmas no less.

The end should be this. but it not. Star wars9 make me feel so sad when i come out Cinema.

People are hungry for a different space epic..totaly different from star wars

Could it be that people aren't thrilled to see the most relatable character die? Who would've thought?

Once was enough for me. The ending was unsatisfying and hopeless. BenSoloDeservedBetter ReyDeservedBetter savebensolo

Wild. Going for my second viewing tomorrow.

It even deserve lower than THAT

First SW movie I don't want to see again.

I saw TFA 5 times (mostly because of Kylo Ren), I saw TLJ 7 times (mostly because of Ben Solo and Rey of Jakku) and I went to see TROS for Ben Solo and left without him.

I shouldn’t feel happy about this! I should be seeing the movie multiple times, I should be happy to see the movie, I should be excited to get more merch, I should have loved this movie. But I didn’t and a lot of others didn’t either.

One time was more than enough for me, if it had been the satisfying ending they were saying I would have watched several times 🙄

You bet your butt I refunded those $17 tickets.

Last Jedi and Rian Johnson killed Star Wars. Congratulations

It was agonising to watch StarWars TheRiseOfSkywalker the first time, why would I put myself through that again? I wouldn’t do that even if Disney paid me for it. This monstrosity has one of the worst scripts I’ve encountered and what a downer of an ending! 👎

Monday TROS made $29.3 mil vs $21.5 mil for TLJ. Due to it being released later in the month all schools are out and it can expect stronger mid week grosses then TLJ. In fact it is pacing to make more money then TLJ over its first 10 and 17 day periods by a wide margin

Of course this is only part of the story and requires context (1) Lands closer to Christmas then the other 2... people were shopping this weekend, (2) Mid week grosses will be much stronger for this film then TLJ making up that opening weekend.

I loved it. Don’t get why others don’t

But that’s the trend for all the third movies in the trilogy - has little to do with the quality of the film.

And it made $30 million on Monday which is massive.

BenSoloDeservedBetter

Disneyfixthemovie

The bleakest, saddest, most incoherent of SW films.

I saw TLJ seven times in theater. I’ve only seen TROS once. Refunded three other tickets. Still feeling heartbroken after this mess of a film.

I'm legit one of the biggest fans there is. I've spent way too much on SW stuff and legit read every EU. Kinda sad really. I didn't see this movie and I never will. I know many that feel the same.

Because end of Skywalker lineage and rise of Palpatine lineage is just too much. Better have left Rey a nobody than make her an unexplainable Palpatine

Cancelled my tickets. Yes. Plural.

Fucking hate it by the end trosspoilers

A reminder to everyone commenting that when force awakens came out everyone...everyoneeeee....was saying kylo ren was nothin but a bratty bitch

I cant tell though if poor returns are the fault of TLJ reception, or TLJ AND TROS reception.

For 2 (almost 3) movies, they gave us this tormented soul of Kylo Ren, Kylo/Ben makes amends with his father, Ben is at peace, he knows he’s found love and happiness in Rey all in the span of 5 goddamn minutes and then he’s taken away?! Never to be mentioned again?! That’s BS.

Literally any other movie this headline would read totally different ...176 million is huge so stfu

Yeah because a lot of people had enough after watching it once

Was expecting 3-4 viewings, not going again.

Far too many silly fanboys and girls here who only care about one character lol. Fantastic film!!

I cancelled and refunded my tickets after the first showing. It’s absolutely heart breaking what they did to the entire sequel trilogy cast. They were OOC, sidelined, turned into racist stereotypes, killed after years of abuse, and had their agency stripped. ReyDeservedBetter

refunded all my tickets ✌🏼

I’m not sure I understand. People only want to see a movie that is predictable and fits their expectations? I really liked it! Ben killed billions of people - sorry, it’s a stretch that that’s redeemable. They had a moment...And, the Skywalker name lived on. Sheesh...

when you didnt think they could make something worse then'we ran outta gas'..and they did..starwars awful

New Hashtag StarwarsBurnOut

The farce is strong with this one. StarWars RiseOfSkwalker

)))

Ah diminishing returns, its almost if planning out a shared narrative and direction through three movies would have helped. Disney is such a passive progressive

It was supposed to be a happy ending for the Skywalker Saga. Well, it wasn’t—it was tragic. People are heartbroken.

Mannnn... would be awesome if the directors know what the fuck they doing with the sequel plot lol

Lol because we all refunded tickets.

I honestly just read spoilers and said to myself 'Nah, I'm good.'

Yes as all crap RogueOne the only good film since 1977

I still don't see why people dislike it so much in these comments. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I went and have since experienced buyers remorse.

It's almost like people don't want to re-watch films that invoke symptoms of depression in their audiences

The Last Jedi has had a down effect on the entire brand and turned people a little sour on it.

BenSoloDeservesBetter

HAHAHAHA!!!!! BenSoloDeservedBetter

Cancelled tickets and asked for refunds after the first viewing. Breaking my heart once is more than enough TheRiseOfTheSkywalker TheFallOfSkywalker BenSoloDeservesBetter ReyDeservesBetter

I don't want to see it again

I would have gone and seen it a thousand times as I did with TFA and TLJ, but seeing Ben Solo’s death, and with it the complete extinction of the Skywalker family, just one time was enough for me.

Was not good unfortunately.

😭 bringbensoloback

They should have let BenSolo live. Happy endings draw in the crowds but what do I know. I’m no one.

What made it so bad. I want to see it ? The fact that I'm not a huge star wars fan and I want to see it. While everyone is complaining about it, might be the reason.

Take ADAMDRIVER off the cover of that fucking story. He’s THE BEST thing about this fucked up, disgusting movie.

We cancelled other tickets. One time was more than enough for this thing. TheRiseOfSkywalker BenSoloDeservedBetter

I know a tonne of people AND kids who cancelled their tickets after seeing their fave character KyloRen BenSolo die tragically, moments after kissing the love of his life. That...is not a happy ending.

TROS is not worthy to be call a cinema.

The movie’s quality did not deserve ot’s actors and actress especially Daisy, Adam and Carrie.

I hope it continues to underperform.

bonnystill How many people canceled tickets or refuse to go multiple times like they did for TFA and TLJ? Raises hand

bonnystill Good!

You kill our character, we kill your box office receipts

It was highly anti climatic...

Shit movie

FLOPPPPP

Given the quality of the film, it seems that amount is a hundred million too much. Still, pretty sure TheRiseOfSkywalker will hit a billion.

But what do they expect movies to make? Im sure it will end up with a bijillion dollars profit. I guess I don’t know how to gauge a successful film.

Lol.. its a dumpster fire

Marvel has a unifying creative vision. Star Wars feels like it lurches from one movie to the next going 'ok, what now?' Disney tried to market RiseofSkywalker as the end of the Skywalker saga but to many LastJedi already killed it. Declining enthusiasm was entirely predictable

Technically, yes. Two. There will be a third next year. Out of 24. 😳

To be fair, Marvel took almost 12 years to make ONE movie about Natasha, while doing trilogy about male heroes. Heroes I love, don’t get me wrong, but let’s not pretend Marvel was a pioneer. It wasn’t.

Identity politics are destroying the quality of your stories, Variety. I hope you read the comments, but somehow I doubt it. Even your target audience (women, people of color) aren't lapping that crap up.

Sponsored

Nobody cares if a movie has a female or person of color as the lead. The new Star Wars movies have been a disaster, behind the camera and in front. The fact that these films represent nothing more than 'female' or 'POC' should tell you why people don't like them.

Diversity was not the issue in the Star Wars trilogy. It was plenty diverse. However, as a woman, I will say, I am sick of the goody two shoes, virginal, portrayal of every woman in this trilogy. I couldn’t relate to any of the female characters, including Rey. Good grief.

Ones got Kevin Feige the other has Kathleen Kennedy. And it’s ironic who does feminism better.

🥺🥺🥺

Marvel has one movie about 80 on metacritic and it's Black Panther, while Star Wars has 4, different quality standard

Marvel took over a decade to give Black Widow proper recognition, only announced POC or Female centered movies after WB announced theirs. It's not something to be proud of, specially when you're trying to mock another franchise for lack of diversity.

Marvel has debuted TWO films on women and people of color. Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Sheesh the WB even produced Wonder Woman before they could get a leading woman on screen. Just because they have films in the pipeline after 10 years does not make them revolutionaries.

The new trilogy of Star Wars had a diverse cast, a female hero at its helm. So I don't know in what Universe does this writer lives in. You can trash the movies Lucasfilm had released lately but diverse, it most certainly has been.

Are you freaking kidding me? It took TEN YEARS for Marvel to deliver a female solo movie and there's only one female led movie for the upcoming output. Avengers: Endgame sidelined all of its female characters and then tried to make up for it with that lame A-Force Scene.

“Marvel has produced movies centered on female heroes and people of color to widespread success and rabid fan enthusiasm” 23 films from 2008 to 2019. 1 film about a person of colour. 1 film about a female hero. Where are these plurals coming from?

Variety stop shifting the blame for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker on the fans, nobody sees a film for representation, the fact you even insinuate that is beyond shoddy journalism. It is the definition of desperate. The blame for Star Wars current state rests with Lucasfilm.

Marvel were only able to do this after the likes of Wonder Woman and had built a loyal fanbase over previous decade while Disney's Star Wars universe with 5 films over 5 years was built on greed as everyone apart from Disney knew yearly Star Wars films was going to be far to many

Maybe because Marvel fans their lives doesn’t depends of these movies, they are : we saw the movie , we don’t like it ok, next. And don’t live in the past

imagine still believing the problems ppl have with the ST is all about identity politics. there is no shortage of ppl wanting to vent about it for a myriad of their own reasons but entertainment media hasnt bothered to listen. just stoke division for clicks!

Marvel has a greater amount source material. Star Wars fails because they watered down existing characters instead of telling new stories (see: The Mandalorian). Rey’s story, far away from the original material, could’ve been epic. Or Finn’s, or Poe’s...

A pedant writes: Jaws was 1975 and was widely regarded as heralding the era of the blockbuster. It was also a B movie that benefited from A grade production. Come on Variety - this is basic film history.

Marvel has one movie about 80 on metacritic and it's Black Panther

They don't need to justified !! Congratulation to All Team Disney and Lucas Film for Your BOX OFFICE !!👏👏👏👏 Star Wars an amazing Journey, thank to All Team !! 👍👍

In whatever Time Star Wars is, has been and will be The Best saga from all the times without a doubt

Marvel has a 50+ year history of telling a wide variety of stories.

Zzzzz

They own everything! They will be top earners every year! monopoly

BUT IT WON’T PAY ITS DISNEY PARK EMPLOYEES IN ANAHEIM A LIVING WAGE

Or EVER AGAIN

🙄

Hmm. May?

Hmm..what about the movie already scheduled for December 2022, that Variety talked to Bob Iger about on the red carpet before the TROS premiere, about which an announcement is due next month?

Enjoyed this movie! A good ending.
