CANBERRA, Australia — Rio Tinto chief executive Jean-Sebastien Jacques will leave the Anglo-Australian mining giant by March over the destruction of Australian Indigenous sacred sites to access iron ore, the company said on Friday.
By mutual agreement, Jacques will step down once a replacement has been appointed or on March 31, whichever happens sooner, the statement said.Rio Tinto announced last month that Jacques would lose $3.5 million in bonuses and Salisbury and Niven around $700,000 each over the destruction in May of two rock shelters in Juukan George in Western Australia state that had been inhabited for 46,000 years.
How big is the golden parachute?
LindaMottram YES.
Comparing Australia’s attitude to 46,000 year occupation of the Jukkan Caves with the French attitude to Lascaux. The French built a replica to prevent damage to the actual caves, but Australia permitted the ancient caves to be blown apart!
Does Australia have a government that gives a s..t?
Did the extensive archaeological excavation of the Jukkan Caves reduce their perceived importance; as in, ‘we, (Rio Tinto), have excavated many metres (18) and removed 7000 artefacts’.
Let’s call them what they are, sacred Aboriginal sites
For a crime against shared humanity heritage that was priceless, this man gets to lose his job but then goes on to live in a palace, get pocket money from directorships, meanwhile Rio Tinto‘s share values goes up due to not having this CEO at the helm. This is just a PR exercise.
In America he'd get to rob the company pension plan, while also getting a 8 figure bonus for his trouble
Cool. Guy gets to retire with a slap on the wrist, meanwhile the destroyed sites remain destroyed. This is nothing but a lame PR stunt.
Pa que esperar a Marzo, debió partir al minuto del crimen
