Serie A is the last of Europe's top five leagues to publish its fixture list, a move that damages its brand and alienates supporters.

STADIO GIUSEPPE MOCCAGATTA, ALESSANDRIA, ITALY - 2019/07/25: The official Serie A 2019-2020 match ball Nike Merlin 2 is pictured during the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round football match between Torino FC and Debrecen VSC. Torino FC wonIt was the news that so many had been waiting for, but for the majority of them it had come too late. On Wednesday the Lega Serie A finally announced that the fixtures for 2019/20 would be released live on TV on Monday, July 29th at 18.45 CET.

Following the popularity of the TV show Football Italia broadcasted by Channel 4 the during the mid-1990’s and early 2000s, Serie A has a large audience in the UK. Those who grew up watching the show are now old enough to have their own disposable income, and many of them dream of visiting some of the stadiums and experiencing the unique atmospheres on the peninsula for themselves.

The late release of the fixtures almost certainly precludes travel to games scheduled for August and early September, causing frustration among those who would be keen to spend their summer holiday time watching the league that they love in person. Indeed, last summer there was discontent when Juventus surprised everyone with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. This was a huge coup for Serie A, however many who would have travelled to his opening matches with the Bianconeri were prevented from doing so due to extortionate air fares due to the non-existent gap between the fixture announcement and the games themselves.
