explained how the district approaches mathinstruction during a recent video presentation. The presentation was part of a series that looks at instruction in core curriculum areas each month this spring.
“Math is the art of being puzzled and un-puzzling yourself,” Branum said in the presentation. “You begin with a program you don’t understand. Then, using the skills from your tool box, higher-order thinking skills and teacher guidance, you slowly begin to see how all of the pieces fit together. That is the beauty of math."
Two of the school board’s goals involve closing academic and opportunity gaps in math. One goal targets third grade math — a key indicator of whether a student is on course for academic success, Branum said. The other goal focuses on Algebra 1, which research showsis the best predictor of whether a student will graduate from high school, Branum said.
Math instruction has three key areas across all grade levels, Branum said. These include numeracy, or the ability to understand and work with numbers; computational skills; and algebraic reasoning.
