A group of engineers MacGyvered a ventilator that could be mass-produced for less than $200 apiece

The invention could be a stopgap for hospitals around the country in need of thousands of ventilators as the crush of Covid-19 cases climbs in the coming weeks.

if { function loadCSS{function d{for;t?o.media=n||"all":setTimeout}var o=window.document.createElement,a=t||window.document.getElementsByTagName[0],i=window.document.styleSheets;return o.rel="stylesheet",o.href=e.trim,o.media="only x",a.parentNode.appendChild,d,o}window.loadCSS=loadCSS; } #g-VENTILATORHACK-box.ai2html_export { max-width: 300px; width:100%; margin: 0 auto; } .g-aiImg { margin-top: -1.2px; } .

The automated ventilator could also replace the practice of manually pumping air into patients’ lungs using devices known as bag-valve masks, he said. Medical professionals can tire rapidly doing it, and risk infecting themselves as well. “Training health-care professionals to use these assembled ventilators with little to no diagnostic information and then troubleshooting any issues that may arise could lead to even more risk for the patients,” he said in an email.

Engineers should get all the sex.

There are several DIY open source vebtilator projects in DK for visors, masks & ventilators, but thanks for mentioning my alma mater! bioE.rice.edu

200 bucks!? You'll never hear about it again.

But I don't think FDA will allow this be used because this will hurt the medical companies interest.

Why dont we all 3D print ventilator components. Millions of 3D printers.

Some Americans think that all problems are the fault of China, so if the women in their family have gynecological diseases, they must also think that they are caused by Chinese men!

Those guys ROCK‼️ Big time. Thank God for genius.

Too bad the CDC will never approve of its use. Too simple.

Amazing.

Did they contact the govs not fema they are taking supplies

They had the product yrs ago and got killed by the evil dominating ventilator maker.

Bag valve mask approaches, such as shown here, force air into lungs, require heavy sedation, and can damage lungs. No inexpensive ventilator has been able to respond to patient breathing which is essential to proper recovery.

With any luck the FDA would approve it in like 5 years and a billion dollars. We’re saved!

The medical device industry will never let something so innovative and inexpensive make it to market.

Good thing there are still some college students not majoring in Gender Studies.

Brilliant.

Why haven't we been building modern iron lungs? While cumbersome, they're simple and inexpensive, they're not invasive, inducing a coma isn't needed, and they're much more suitable for elderly patients.

IngrahamAngle We are only at the beginning of the first wave -no idea yet how high the number of dead will be. There will be at least one more wave. It may mutate. We are 2Stupid2Quarantine, so before coronavirus burns out next year, OVER one million Americans will have died from Covid_19.

RiceUniversity stole Indian idea of cheap ventilator....narendramodi anandmahindra

200$ is still probably overengineered. 44 € is a much better target, and any day now some engineer in India will push it down to 20…

But can it do what needs to be done to ventilate people in ARDS? Can it do Bi-Level ventilation? Can it do inverse ratio? RespiratoryTherapist

IngrahamAngle They will never get it to 'market'!! The 'Powers That Be' will never allow it. Guarantee they are moving to kill it. ☹️☹️☹️☹️

JoeConchaTV Never discount American ingenuity.

IngrahamAngle Gig is up Laura. We now know the plan is to declare martial law in the US within 4 weeks, and use the massive economic stimulus to take control of the USD.

IngrahamAngle Wait until the ventilators manufacturer start complaining they can’t make money. The FDC and CDC will hold up and never approve it because they buddies can make millions.

IngrahamAngle Laura eating breakfast. What a nice horse face

IngrahamAngle Great inventing by really smart people, but there’s too much money to be made by producing a ventilator that costs thousands. Just like the cost of prescription drugs.

IngrahamAngle Wake up! Zionists's crimes continue day by day in Palestine. Their only hope is General Qassim Suleimani and Hassan Nasrallah.

IngrahamAngle The problem is the sensors and electronics. Must be up to medical standards and must be certified as such.

IngrahamAngle Love it!

IngrahamAngle ... but wil it pass FDA scrutiny

IngrahamAngle This wouldn't do because it doesn't rip off the people!

IngrahamAngle The power of human ingenuity. I pray this is accurate!!

IngrahamAngle Yeah! That should bring the price down on all the rest of the high priced ventilators. What will they do when they're not being sought after. More than that, what are they going to do when there's a surplus of all these ventilators & nobody wants them anymore?

IngrahamAngle Quit taking about it and make them

I wonder if scuba diving equipment can be used. A slightly enriched oxygen air mix?

Does it have peep and pressure support, auto-adjust for pressure and alarms? It’s great if it saves lives but don’t make people think ventilators are simple inexpensive machines.

It won’t matter. Can’t use them without sedation drugs.

200 dollar biotrauma producing machines.

StarStuff_ivan I wonder if doctors think it's useful (can't read the article because paywall).

I can't find the whole project to build it. I am an engineer and this would be very useful in my country.

TrueFactsStated These cheap ventilators will not work, stop this now

TrueFactsStated Please stop this

Omg how about some diversity in that team!! They need to hire more 4 year olds girls and 80 year olds women on that team.

They are not FDA approved! Lawyers waiting patiently.

Many issues to be resolved, not least is the lack of respiratory therapists.

GTech did this ages ago..

So proud of our Owls!

I love this generation so much

Start production ASAP

maggieNYT ...gee, will that ventilator get FDA approval? at $200? When the big makers get 5k for theirs? Anyone want to bet this won't be unapproved

do u really think its possible?

maggieNYT Hey SharkTankABC mcuban LoriGreiner et al how about throwing some money behind this?

“are building a prototype””could be mass produced””need authorization”... useless article

God bless them. Of course Fox News will call this a hoax and an attempt to impeach Trump.

DO IT!

AWESOME! May GOD continue to BLESS THE WORK OF THEIR HANDS🙏

maggieNYT How quickly. We needed them yesterday!

This explains how these MacGyver solutions could do more harm than good:

absolute total fail, they needed to McGruber it

richardeananderson

maggieNYT UFVentures also created a ventilator as part of an open source program.

Trump will sue them for being smart and taking decisive action and for infringing on his investment with ventilator companies.

yokoboji Great! Necessity is the mother of invention. I just hope the hobby shop wasn't Hobby Lobby.

Now that's what I call American Ingenuity. Very cool.

Too bad hobby shops are closed as non-essential.

maggieNYT It's not an engineering problem, sadly. Read how global conglomerates conspired to prevent U.S. attempts to revolutionize ventilator design.

O-kay

maggieNYT Basic machines perform basic operations. Complex machines are required to perform complex operations. CPAP machines are not ventilators.

The lawyers are lining up. Litigiousness prevents the use of potential life saving stop gaps.

maggieNYT but it’s like building a car, according to realDonaldTrump

Are there enough ambu bags to make these in mass quantities?

Necessity is the mother of all invention.

Make them in US instead of China

It's an excellent idea. We should use the idea of pooling the use of medical devices much more when possible. COVID19

It’s still an amazing country

I really hope that after all that has passed people like these keep doing this, because the medical equipment industry only see money. Everything is expensive.

That is American ingenuity and exceptionalism...and $$$ isn't the main motivator in many cases

And I'd bet that it's a thousand times better than any of the crap that's being dumped from China. Like this ...

So, 99% of a ventilator's cost is unnecessary excess or profit? Hmmm. Seems suspicious. Next, you'll be telling me pharmaceutical drugs only cost pennies to produce and could still be profitable at a fraction of their cost.

American ingenuity and innovation at its best!

realDonaldTrump helenesgreenshoots

It's great to hear about such advancements. But be cautiously optimistic as none of these can be used without extensive testing and approval. It's not like they can start using these on actually patients beginning next week.

University of Minnesota has done this also, the local news reported on last week.

Bravo to them, 👍

Hint. About all medical equipment could be produced for insignificant amounts.
