For a lot of Broadway fans, the return of the Super Soul Musical to the Great White Way after some 50 years is a cause for celebration.

NEW YORK — “Everybody look around,” they’re singing, festively, at the Marquis Theatre. “There’s reason to rejoice, you see.”

Smalls died in 1987 at 43 from a burst appendix. Sitting there at the Marquis, I started to think about what else he might have composed for Broadway, had he kept on easing down the road of life. Deborah Cox as Glinda, Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy and cast in “The Wiz” on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in New York.
