Review: The robot revolution is coming: Will there be any room left for us?

By Ron Charles Ron Charles Critic, Book World Email Bio Follow Critic, Book World April 17 at 10:00 AM Half a century ago, Philip K. Dick asked, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” and now Ian McEwan is sure those androids are pulling the wool over our eyes.

That narrator is Charlie Friend, a lazy day-trader in London who vacillates between bouts of grandiosity and worthlessness. The ultimate early adopter, Charlie uses a recent inheritance to buy “the first truly viable manufactured human with plausible intelligence and looks, believable motion and shifts of expression.” The robot’s name is Adam, which suggests what the creators must think of themselves.

How exactly would you dismantle Adam’s claim to consciousness? Try clinging to the primacy of biology and you’ll slip on the comedy of Terry Bisson’s “thinking meat.” As countless fiction and nonfiction writers have pointed out, we have little understanding of what our own consciousness is; we’re in no position to deny it to a perfect simulacrum.

Let it come. I’d rather pay a robot $15/hr than someone who is incompetent or seems disgusted to have a job.

The problem isn’t the technology; advanced automation could easily lead to broad, Star Trek-style prosperity. But it won’t, because it’ll be controlled and exploited by the same small handful of obscenely wealthy, greedy people and corporations who own everything else in America

The technological singularity is upon us everyone, we always thought movies like the Terminator to be purely fictional but we're not far away from the beginning.

Well, here's your answer...

This is why I trained to build and repair them. I always adjust any code that enables the machines to repair themselves so that the fix requires highly trained human intervention, me. The last Fanuc robot I repaired, figured out what I was doing, it tried to have me fired.

Review: What Childish Gambino did at Coachella to try to live up to Beyoncé'This is not a concert,' Donald Glover said not long into his performance as Childish Gambino on Friday night at Coachella. What he was trying to give the audience, he insisted, was 'an experience.' When your music is weak, you need more of a show. What a shit review. Why the need to compare him to Beyoncé? Why not focus on the new approaches artists like Glover and Beyoncé are taking to making a “concert” what it is...
